Production Planning

PP (Production Planning) answers three questions: what to produce and how much (planning), when and on which resources (scheduling and capacities), and how to track actual production (execution, confirmations, costs). It turns a sales demand into concrete orders for the shop floor and for purchasing.

Audience
Planners, schedulers, process engineers, shop floor supervisors, PP, MM or CO consultants.
Prerequisites
Level 1: none. Levels 2 and 3: MM basics (material, stock, purchasing).
Duration

Chapters in this level

  1. Bill of materials, work center and routing in detail · What each object contains, and what SAP does with it.
  2. Creating the bill of materials, routing and production version · The three objects that tell MRP what to take, how to do it and with which method.
  3. Planning strategies and demand management · How do sales orders consume forecasts?
  4. MRP in practice: net requirement and lot size · Reproduce the MRP calculation for one material and one period.
  5. Reading MD04 over time · MD04 is a material's logbook: it tells the story of its stock, day after day.
  6. Simulation: the order for 750 watches · Standard cost 80 CHF (materials 60 + activities 20). The actual assembly times exceed the standard: follow the variance through to settlement.
  7. Scheduling and capacities · How long does an operation take, and can the work center absorb it?
  8. Confirmations, backflush and mass processing · What the shop floor reports, and what SAP does automatically.
  9. What an order costs: how costs flow in · Every shop-floor action debits the order; the finished product receipt credits it; the balance becomes work in process or a variance.
  10. Repetitive, Kanban, make-to-order, process · Four alternatives to the classic production order.
  11. Producing a variant · The BOM contains every possible part; the configuration picks the ones for the order.
  12. Producing for a project · The project network expresses a requirement; MRP plans it in the project segment; the production order delivers into the project stock.
